Description - Moto Guzzi has been promising this eight-valve version of its Norge touring bike for almost three years. Now it’s here, it turns out that the Mandello factory has changed almost everything else for good measure.
The engine is the same 1,151cc unit that propels the impressive new Stelvio adventure bike, making just over 100bhp and with the decent spread of torque that earlier versions lacked. It mixes good lugging power with an appealing, overtly mechanical sound and feel, as well as flawless fuelling.
It doesn’t have quite the urge at lower revs of BMW’s R1200RT, but still offers enough for confident two-up touring with luggage thanks to 20 per cent more torque than the old Norge.
Guzzi says that 85 per cent of the parts have been renewed, and it shows. The frame is carried over but the suspension is new. It used to be too soft – now it’s firmer and more sporty. The bodywork is all new, although the overall look is familiar. The seat and panniers have been renewed, too, the former for better comfort, the latter to improve the seal and waterproofing.
Mostly it all works very well. The airflow around the rider is smooth and free from turbulence, while the plush seat is good for many hours on board.
