Incredible styling of the original Al Leamy-designed
Wallpaper Description:
Smitten by the incredible styling of the original Al Leamy-designed Auburn Boattail Speedsters (1927-1934) as well as the subsequent Gordon Buehrig-designed 1935-'36 Auburns, in 1998 I, Terry Cook of DECO RIDES, saw a sketch in RODDERS JOURNAL. It changed my life- I embarked on a six year quest to build molds and manufacture the DECO RIDES BOATTAIL fiberglass bodies.
Using a rectangular steel tube chassis built by Fat Man Fabrications of Charlotte, NC, and relying on a V-10 Viper engine for power, the first DECO RIDES Boattail Speedster was completed in July 2004. It sold to Ford dealer and avid car collector Sam Pack of Carrollton, TX for $137,500 at the RM Auction in Monterey, CA during Pebble Beach week.
The Deco Rides Speedster is a totally different car than the Speedster Motorcars replica 1935-'36 Auburn Boattail.
The Speedster Motorcars Z-Series Zephyr Coupe and Convertible as well as their replica 1935-'36 Auburn Boattail Speedster are ONLY offered as complete, finished "turnkeys."
A second DECO RIDES Boattail Speedster in black and silver with closed pontoon rear fenders and powered by Maserati, was completed in June of 2005, and was sold at Pebble Beach RM Monterey Auction in August 2005 for $100,000. The third wood-topped DECO RIDES Speedster was completed in May 2006 and will be sold at the RM Auction Aug. 18-19 in Monterey, CA.
The original DECO RIDES BOATTAIL SPEEDSTERS (not to be confused with Speedster Motorcars replica Auburns) are available as a bare hand laid fiberglass body ($12,450), or as custom built-to-order finished cars ($85,000 and up, depending on engine choice, etc., and 6 to 9+ months build time required). Fat Man Fabrications in Charlotte, NC offers a rolling chassis (no wheels or tires) for the Foose Boattail. The price is $7,625 and includes disc brakes and coil over shocks on all four corners with a 9-inch Ford rear and rack and pinion manual steering. The Foose car is not a Speedster Motorcars built vehicle. We also offer a variety of windshield frame choices ranging from $850 for an unplated brass Duval style frame to $1,700 for a complete, curved glass, laid back Stanbley Wanlass designed frame like the one on the Foose "Highbouy". Aluminum grilles with polished face side are $720.
Constantly evolving, DECO RIDES is introducing a new version of the Boattail Speedster. It will feature Figoni & Falaschi inspired fully enclosed front and rear pontoons, a steel reproduction Type 57 Bugatti grille, and metal hood and side panels, as presented in the photoshop illustration above. The metal full fender skirts will be another option. It will fit on the same Fat Man Fabriocation frame, but pricing on this car will be considerably higher than the First Generation Foose Boattail because while the body and fenders are hand laid fiberglass, many of the parts will be custom built, hand hammered alloy. At this point we are trying to determine if we should offer this advanced model in Kit Car form or only as a finished "turnkey".
