Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Wallpapers – Chevrolet Corvette is a sports car by the Chevrolet division of General Motors (GM) that has been produced in six generations. The first model, a convertible, was designed by Harley Earl and introduced at the GM Motorama in 1953 as a concept show car. Myron Scott is credited for naming the car after the type of small, maneuverable warship called a corvette.
Originally built in Flint, Michigan and St. Louis, Missouri, the Corvette is currently manufactured in Bowling Green, Kentucky and is the official sports car of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The National Corvette Museum documents the car’s history, hosts exhibits, tours, and the annual anniversary celebration.
A Corvette has been selected as the Indianapolis 500 pace car 11 times, most recently in 2012 with a Chevrolet Corvette C6 ZR1 pace model driven by Guy Fieri.
Just two months after the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray debuted at Detroit’s North American International Auto Show, General Motors is will build on the buzz with the launch of the convertible model. Set to be unveiled on March 5 at the Geneva Motor Show, the Corvette Stingray convertible will offer the same power, technology, and style of the coupe model introduced in January.
“Every Corvette is designed at the outset as an open car,” said Tadge Juechter, Corvette chief engineer in a statement. “The new Stingray is no different, with the coupe and convertible designed to excel in any situation – be it your daily commute, a drive across the continent, or charging through twisting back roads.”
The seventh generation of the Corvette, the Stingray and its convertible model are both expected to go on sale in the third quarter of this year. The 2014 Corvette features a 450 horsepower engine and will start at $49,600.
Production of the 2014 Corvette is estimated to begin in August or September 2013. Corvette Bowling Green, Kentucky Assembly Plant tours should begin again about September or October 2013. As noted previously, the official announcement date for the 2014 Corvette was on the 13th of January, 2013. As presented, the new generation Corvette will resurrect the “Stingray” name, last used in 1976, which should appeal to its current owners’ demographics though whether the prized younger ‘aspirational’ market will recognize the name will be the subject of much marketing study. The interior includes wide-bottom seats as standard, with sportier versions with high side bolsters optional.
Features of the new generation include a carbon fiber hood and removable roof panel. Its fenders, doors and rear quarter panels remain composite. The underbody panels are made of “carbon-nano” composite and it makes use of a new hydroformed aluminum frame which locates the four wheels an inch farther apart, front to rear and side to side. Despite the increased use of aluminum and other light weight materials, the overall weight of the car remains the same as the previous generation.
The new 6.2L LT1 V8 engine features three technologies new to the Corvette: direct injection, variable valve timing and an active fuel management system. Fuel injectors are located under the intake manifold. It remains rear-wheel drive with the transaxle located in the rear. Transmission choices include a 7-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters.
