Formula One racing didn’t happen in 2009 at the famous Circuit Gilles Villeneuve of Ile Notre-Dame in Montreal. A dispute between Grand Prix F1 du Canada and Formula One Administration meant for the first time in 20 years Montreal’s F1 race was cancelled.

However, the dispute was settled late last year and Montreal’s F1 race is back on the calendar in 2010. The city will host the race June 13.

News of this development got Red Bull Racing all excited. And regardless of the frozen weather in Montreal, they were determined to put an F1 car around Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, and on the ice of Lac-a-l’Eau-Claire, north of Montreal.

Monaghan investigated what rallysport racers do to successfully run on snow, ice and gravel. What did he learn? The biggest difference is in the tires.

So Red Bull Racing consulted the tire experts at Bridgestone, and together they chose to fit the F1 car with specially designed Bridgestone Potenza snow tires — essentially much narrower and taller than normal F1 tires. Each front tire was fitted with 420 studs, and each of the rear tires was garnished with 588 studs. The tires were produced at Bridgestone Motorsport’s Technical Centre in Toyko.

Normally an F1 car is running at peak revs as it navigates a racetrack. But running at peak revs with studded tires would simply rip the studs from the rubber. To ensure that wouldn’t happen, the engine’s rev range was limited so it couldn’t provide full torque.

Buemi drove the Red Bull car on Circuit Gilles Villeneuve and the team also laid out a replica course on the frozen waters of Lac-al’Eau-Claire.

Monaghan wasn’t on hand for the filming, but after he viewed the video he thought Buemi, “was a brave driver.”

He said: “And yes, you can take a dedicated surface car (meaning the asphalt of a racetrack) and make it run on ice and snow.”

Twice a winner in Monaco, Coulthard was team-mate to Mika Häkkinen in the Finn’s two Drivers’ Championship-winning seasons for McLaren Mercedes before helping establish the Red Bull team. His best Drivers’ Championship finish was second in 2001.

After retiring from racing in Formula One, Coulthard continued to be involved with the Red Bull Racing team as a consultant, as well as joining the BBC as a Television commentator and pundit.

He returned as an active driver in the DTM series for 2010, piloting a 2008 Mercedes-Benz C-Class for Mücke Motorsport. He has finished in 16th position in the drivers championship in both years of competing in the series.

On 18 October 2012, Coulthard announced retirement from racing after the 2012 DTM season, his final race planned to be on 21 October 2012 at Hockenheim.

The F1 season consists of a series of races, known as Grands Prix (from French, originally meaning great prizes), held throughout the world on purpose-built circuits and public roads. The results of each race are evaluated using a points system to determine two annual World Championships, one for the drivers and one for the constructors.

The racing drivers, constructor teams, track officials, organisers, and circuits are required to be holders of valid Super Licences, the highest class of racing licence issued by the FIA.

And, Drag racing is a competition in which specially prepared automobiles or motorcycles compete, usually two at a time, to be first to cross a set finish line. The race follows a straight course from a standing start over a measured distance, most commonly ¼ mile (1,320 ft (400 m)), with a shorter 1,000 ft (300 m) for some Top Fuel dragsters and funny cars, while 660 ft (200 m) (1/8 mi) is also popular in some circles.

Electronic timing and speed sensing systems have been used to record race results since the 1960s. The faster vehicles need a parachute to slow down, an innovation credited (indirectly) to cartoonist Tom Medley.

Lately a YouTube video advertisement of Volvo FH was put up showcasing “Ballerina Stunt” to show the precise handling of Volvo FH.

Set on an closed highway in Vrgorac, Croatia Faith Dickey (world-record holding tight rope walker) walks across a line between two speeding Volvo FH rigs that just happen to be headed straight for two separate tunnels.

The stunt was set up to show the precise handling of the new Volvo FH. Filmed on an unopened highway in Croatia in cooperation with Hollywood stunt director Peter Pedrero (James Bond, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean.)

It is directed by Academy Award nominee Henry Alex Rubin. Music is by J. Ralph / The Rumor Mill.
