Based on an new architecture which will empower the next Saab 9-3 model, the PhoeniX introduces ‘aeromotional’ design: a visual evocation of the aerodynamic design principles and passion for innovation that inspired the creators of Saab’s first car, the iconic Ursaab.

The PhoeniX embraces teardrop, ‘liquid metal’ forms and a dramatic jet canopy-inspired glasshouse that gives fresh expression to Saab’s signature ‘wraparound’ and translucent ice-block design themes.

The clean, muscular shape enables an exceptionally low drag co-efficient of just 0.25 and also explores the potential for airflow management through the use of distinctive, side-mounted ‘winglets’.

Butterfly opening doors give easy access to a 2+2 cabin that blends simplicity with technology. It has a minimalist, ‘stripped out’ feel, including a new expression of Saab’s driver-focused layout and a world debut for Saab’s innovative IQon infotainment and communications system. In true Saab tradition, there is also a surprisingly versatile cargo deck.

“The PhoeniX establishes a new reference point for the future of Saab product design,” says Jason Castriota, Saab Automobile’s Executive Design Director. “It symbolizes a renaissance of the innovative spirit and passion that drove Saab to build its first car. We’re now taking the visual DNA forward with what we call ‘aeromotional’ design, adding emotion, power and fluidity. This design aesthetic will shape and differentiate future models in the Saab portfolio.”

Under its rippling bodywork, the Saab PhoeniX deploys an innovative driveline, with an electrically-driven rear axle mated to a sophisticated 200 hp, 1.6-liter gasoline turbo engine. The result is an intelligent, hybrid all-wheel-drive capability that enhances driving pleasure while reducing fuel consumption. Combined cycle fuel economy and CO2 emissions are projected to be just 5.0 l/100 km and 119 g/km.

The PhoeniX’s ‘aeromotional’ design theme is inspired by Saab’s aviation roots and draws expression from Ursaab, the prototype designed by aircraft engineers that spawned Saab’s first generation of cars.

The entire form of the PhoeniX is seemingly molded by the wind. Tightly-wrapped by a liquid-like skin, the teardrop cabin resembles a dark ice block and appears to erupt from the center of the muscular bodywork. Two prominent ripples flow along the hood into the disguised windshield pillars, as if barely able to contain a powerful structure underneath.
At the rear, the dark screen also bursts through the outer skin of the rear deck, The tapering form hints at the teardrop rear styling of Ursaab, while the ‘sawn off’, kamm tail echoes a form from Saab’s first coupé, the Sonett.

The low, frontal styling features a stretched interpretation of Saab’s signature three-port grille. A body-colored central wing is now dominant and, in keeping with the car’s minimalist design, LED headlamps are almost invisibly located at its tips. The new grille and hood forms are among the styling themes likely to be seen in future Saab production cars.
Butterfly-opening doors provide enhanced access to the low-slung cabin. There are no visible door handles or mirrors to disrupt airflow, and small cameras on slim stalks provide rearward vision.

Roof-mounted ‘winglets’ enable PhoeniX to cleave the air as efficiently as possible. They channel airflow from the side of the car and direct it across the rear deck, reducing lift forces for greater stability without increasing drag.

In true Scandinavian tradition, the 2+2 cabin adopts a clean, minimalist look. It has the ‘stripped out’ feel of a competition car, with shell-like seats and metalized interior sections that mimic the exposed network of a rollover cage.
Fresh expression is given to Saab’s traditional, driver-focused instrument layout. A circular pod in front of the driver, shaped like the afterburner of a jet engine, presents data in tandem with the head-up display.

Angled at 45º to the driver, a separate module accommodates Saab’s advanced IQon infotainment and communications system. For good ergonomics, the 8-inch touch-screen is as close to the driver’s finger tips as the steering wheel.

Saab IQon (see separate release for full details) is a ground-breaking car communications platform using Google’s AndroidTM operating system. Based on pioneering ‘open innovation’ with third-party service providers and applications developers, it comprises an embedded computer platform which seamlessly connects to the internet when the car’s ignition is switched on. The touch-screen provides access to audio and entertainment streaming, online navigation, on-board music storage and smartphone-like downloading of applications.

Red illumination for all instrument and ambient cabin lighting brings warmth and emotion to the cabin. This includes the floor, where LED light tubes are exposed by perforations in the black carpeting. It is all part of the new ‘aeromotional’ design strategy, incorporating ‘fire and ice’ effects.

The PhoeniX’s curvaceous rear deck disguises a deep-opening tailgate. It gives access to a flat cargo deck, including fold-flat rear seatbacks and a cargo track for adaptable load carrying.

Under its sculpted hood and beneath its cargo deck, the PhoeniX advances Saab’s rightsizing powertrain strategy. Its propulsion system combines a highly efficient, 1.6-liter turbo engine with innovative, electric rear wheel drive technology.

The compact, all-aluminum gasoline engine packs 200 hp (147 kW) and includes variable valve timing and lift control, as well as start/stop functionality, minimal parasitic losses and a fuel cut-off function. A stainless steel tank is fitted, which is lighter and less expensive than a conventional plastic design,
The engine is supported by Saab’s innovative eXWD system. It comprises a rear drive unit housing a 25 kW (34 hp) electric motor/generator powered by a small battery pack. Regenerative braking is used to sustain the battery’s charge.
Now under development for the next generation of Saab cars, this hybrid propulsion system enables the benefits of all-wheel-drive while also reducing fuel consumption. Using a six-speed manual transmission, projected combined cycle fuel economy and CO2 emissions are just 5.0 l/100 km and 119 g/km.

The driver can select one of three eXWD operating modes. The default Eco mode delivers optimal fuel and CO2 efficiency with power assistance to reduce load on the gasoline engine at low speeds; Sport mode includes maximum power assistance with torque vectoring across the rear axle for greater chassis control; and Traction mode enables optimal grip at take-off and in slippery conditions.

Inside and out, the Saab PhoeniX showcases new design directions and technologies that will be part of forthcoming Saab products.

A product of the British automaker’s Racing division, the company expects the McLaren to be the ultimate driver’s car, both on the road and on the track.

‘The McLaren P1 will be the result of 50 years of racing and road car heritage,’ says McLaren Automotive Executive Chairman Ron Dennis. ‘Twenty years ago we raised the supercar performance bar with the McLaren F1 and our goal with the McLaren P1 is to redefine it once again.’

‘Our aim is not necessarily to be the fastest in absolute top speed but to be the quickest and most rewarding series production road car on a circuit,’ says McLaren Automotive Managing Director Antony Sheriff.

‘It is the true test of a supercar’s all round ability and a much more important technical statement. Our goal is to make the McLaren P1 the most exciting, most capable, most technologically advanced and most dynamically accomplished supercar ever made.’

Though the McLaren P1 concept will only be previewed as a “design study” at the auto show, it is expected that the McLaren F1 successor will be powered by a 3.8 liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine, the same powerplant that is currently used by the McLaren MP4-12C supercar but with some additional features, including the Formula 1 derived, Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS).

When at peak power, with the output of the kERS combined, the P1 is said to deliver an astounding 963 bhp (718 kW). Zero to 100 km/h (62 mp/h) time is said to be 2.8 seconds and but the most highly anticipated, top speed figure, if true, will disappoint a lot many people.

The McLaren P1 is said to reach a top speed a relatively low figure of 384 km/h (239 mph), which is, a heartbreaking, 7 km/h slower than the record breaking McLaren F1’s 391 km/h. We hope this figure is improved when the production is launched by McLaren. Or perhaps, there will be space for a “Special Edition” that could reclaim the production vehicle top speed crown.

Official press conference is scheduled for 27 September at the Paris Motor Show, Mondial de l’Automobile 2012, at 17.45 CEST (16.45 BST). McLaren says the production version of the McLaren P1 will come out next year. More details are expected to come out on September 27.

Twin’Run, a real racing car, features a tubular chassis lifted directly from motorsport competition and a mid-engine 320-hp V6 engine based on Mégane Trophy.

Like its twin, Twin’Z, Twin’Run is a modern and playful take on the city car. Both concept cars express the fifth stage in Renault’s design strategy based on the major phases in a lifetime. Each in its own way represents the “Play” stage (petal) and demonstrates the customisation possibilities of a city car fully in step with its times.

The Twin’Run concept car previews the styling of Renault’s future city car.

Twin’Run drove its first laps in front of spectators at the Monaco Grand Prix. Monaco, with its legendary track, is the ideal theatre for the concept car’s debut. Twin’Run is a sports car through and through and further cultivates the Renault brand’s passion for racing, picking up where the famous R5 Turbo and Clio V6 left off.

The public at Monaco got to see the three racers in action in a pursuit race organized to celebrate Renault motorsport history. Twin’Run led the way with Carlos Tavares, Chief Operating Officer, at the wheel, tailed by a Clio V6 driven by F1 star Charles Pic and a Maxi 5 Turbo with its celebrated driver, Jean Ragnotti, at the helm.

Twin’Run ties in perfectly with the series of concept cars illustrating Renault’s design strategy. The diamonddominated front end underscores the brand identity in line with Renault’s new styling approach. Like Twin’Z, Twin’Run gets blue paint in reference to the “Play” petal of the fifth stage in the brand’s design strategy. Twin’Run’s stomping ground is the world of motorsport.

Twin’Run, has a compact, ultra-dynamic body. The wheels set in the far corners, minimal overhang and high waistline underscore the dynamic feel and promise a great drive.

BLUE AND RED

The blue paint finish on Twin’Run features taut, graphically drawn lines with emphatic shoulders enhanced by touches of red on the strip running all the way along the body and above the rocker panel, as well as two red bands on the roof.

Red also figures at the front, where it underlines the grille and air intakes, and on the ultra-slim door mirrors and the tips of the rear airfoil. A red surround emphasises the circumference of the black and white wheel rims.

The “5″ on the doors refers to the R5 Turbo, the emblematic 1980s rally car. A host of details pay homage to this illustrious forerunner, including the design of the headlights and the generous haunches at the back. The four additional, extra-flat headlights with LED technology are a modernday take on the light racks used in nighttime rally specials. The fully customisable light sequences are controlled by an in-car system. The development of this system was a real challenge as the designers had to provide a powerful light source in a lamp measuring just 25 mm deep.

Twin’Run was developed with the assistance of Tork Engineering / Poclain Vehicules, a French firm specialised in the preparation of chassis for competition. The concept car is a real racing car that has benefited from that competition expertise. The bodywork in composite material covers a multi-tube steel chassis powered by a mid-engine engine derived from Mégane Trophy.

Twin’Run is fitted with the V4Y engine from the Renault-Nissan Alliance, which is used on the road for Laguna, Espace and Latitude but also used in competition with Mégane Trophy. Mounted longitudinally ahead of the rear axle centerline, the V6 3,498 cc power plant delivers 320 hp at 6,800 rpm and torque of 380 Nm at 4,850 rpm. The engine is full-bodied and generous from low revs, delivering linear acceleration and providing excellent traction around bends and in acceleration.

The V6 is mated to a SADEV six-speed sequential gearbox with limited slip differential, enhancing Twin’Run stability and traction in curves. The twin metallic clutch is also borrowed directly from competition.

The air intake vents are positioned at the level of the rear wheel arches. Air extractors in the rear quarter lights help keep the engine cool.

The cooling system has received special treatment with polished aluminum pipes set visibly into the cabin floor. The engine is separated from the driving position by a plexiglass panel.

To ensure good weight distribution despite the mid-engine architecture, various components were positioned under the bonnet. These include the fuel tank, the radiator and the hydraulic system. The concept car is well balanced with a 43/57 weight distribution.

The bodywork in a glass-polyester composite has also benefited from racing expertise. This includes carbon fibre for the front blade, roof, rear vent and wheel arches.

Carbon fibre technology combines aesthetics and efficiency, while keeping costs down.

The two-box architecture of Twin’Run creates lift at high speeds. The aerodynamics have received special attention with a vent channeling the air flow under the car and a fixed airfoil for enhanced aerodynamic support at high speeds.

Twin’Run rests on a multi-tube high-performance steel chassis derived from aeronautics and used in competition. The chassis was developed entirely by Tork Engineering.

The ground link is provided by front and rear axles fitted with double-wishbone suspension with independent pivots. The four pivots, in solid aeronautical quality aluminum, deliver high performance on the track. For filtering and body stability, Twin’Run is fitted with OHLINS spring shock absorbers at the front and rear.

The axles have an anti-roll bar with a diameter of 22 mm at the front and 25 mm at the rear. Roll is perfectly controlled for agility and responsiveness.

The aluminum wheel covers with a special hub with a central bolt can be dismounted in three parts and fit 18″ Michelin tires.

Twin’Run has the cabin of a sports car, as indicated by the tubular chassis and SPARCO seats fitted with safety harnesses. Nevertheless, the emphasis placed on interior design extends well beyond anything normally seen in the world of motorsports.

The door panels and dashboard are upholstered in black and red “alcantara effect” suede. The padded bucket seats, upholstered in three shades of alcantara and carrying the Twin’Run signature, underline the French touch of this concept car.

The driver gains a motorsports steering wheel and sequential gear lever with a high-mounted layout for fast gear changes. The joint welded handbrake is positioned on the same level as the gear lever for demonstration figures such as a 360° rotation.

Under the driver’s feet, the aluminum pedal assembly is a motorsports model. Designed for easy heel-toe moves, it has been tried and tested on many track vehicles (Lodgy Andros / Duster No Limit).

Positioned in a white lacquer console, the instrument cluster is dedicated first and foremost to driving, as on any sports vehicle.

Twin’Run features a 5.5 inch LCD screen positioned just behind the steering wheel. The red and blue multi-page display shows the vehicle speed, gear speed and engine speed, as well as fuel pressure, clutch pressure and oil pressure.

Two red pressure gauges with centrally positioned needles show the oil temperature and water temperature, a last nod to the R5 Turbo.

The whole design of the Mercedes Giuseppe is meant to minimize the resistance created by air. The front of the car has independent winged arms that are capable of adjusting width. Also, the flexible body of the Giuseppe adjusts as per the track.

This bizarre (and awesome!) concept car might look outlandish with its exaggerated proportions, odd stance, and overall indulgent aesthetic.

But the Mercedes Giuseppe is dfferent- it’s an F1 racing machine that, over-the-top as it looks, was designed in every detail to minimize air resistance.

Kia says the concept features a hybrid drivetrain comprised of a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with 201 horsepower that spins the front wheels, while a 44 hp electric motor can add extra thrust to the back rollers when necessary for simulated all-wheel drive. The setup can also provide electric-only propulsion at low speeds.

The interior serves up a carbon fiber dash adorned with analog gauges and a small digital display. Aluminum toggle switches control most of the vehicle’s systems while column-mounted paddle shifters take care of swapping gears. If this all sounds too good to be true, it is. Created as a stunning celebration of the great British brand’s 100 years of sports car excellence the one-off CC100 looks both to the past and the DBR1 – Aston Martin’s greatest sporting triumph on the track – and to the future with its teasing glimpses of potential future design direction.

The 6.0-litre V12-powered concept car today makes its world debut by completing a lap of the famous Nordschleife at Germany’s ADAC Zurich 24 Hours of Nürburgring race. It is lapping the circuit together with the 1000km race-winning 1959 DBR1 with British racing legend Sir Stirling Moss at the wheel. It is the most tangible expression yet of the brand’s year-long 2013 centenary celebrations.

Viewed by tens of thousands of spectators in Germany, the radical speedster is being driven today by Aston Martin CEO Dr Ulrich Bez. He said: “CC100 is the epitome of everything that is great about Aston Martin. It represents our fantastic sporting heritage, our exceptional design capability, our superb engineering know- how and, above all, our adventurous spirit!

“I have nicknamed it ‘DBR100′ because of its affinity to the great 1959 race-winning cars and, of course, our 100-year anniversary in 2013. “But this car is more, even, than a simple ‘birthday present’ to ourselves: it shows that the soul of Aston Martin – the thing that differentiates us from all the other carmakers out there – is as powerful as ever and I very much hope that everyone who catches a glimpse of it at the Nürburgring today enjoys seeing it.”

Designed and constructed in fewer than six months at Aston Martin’s global headquarters in Gaydon, working with key supplier Multimatic Inc, under the leadership of Special Projects and Motorsport Director David King, the finished look of the two-seater CC100 is the work of Design Director Marek Reichman working alongside the brand’s Chief Exterior Designer Miles Nurnberger.

Miles explained: “The brief was very simple, yet enormously testing: create something that reflects the 100 years of Aston Martin heritage and signals the future of the brand.

“The idea of an iconic speedster concept that nods to the Le Mans- and Nürburgring- winning cars of 1959 soon came, and we have had complete freedom to shape this car.”

Marek Reichman said: “I’m extremely proud of the entire team at Gaydon for creating this remarkable sports car concept in such a short time.

“The need to create a truly fitting tribute to 100 years of the Aston Martin brand has brought out the creativity and talent that makes Aston Martin such an exceptional luxury sports car maker.”
Measuring almost four and a half metres nose to tail, and more than two metres wide (including mirrors) the Speedster Concept body is a classic example of the almost infinitely flexible nature of Aston Martin’s trademark Vertical Horizontal engineering philosophy.

With a body and interior crafted from carbon fibre, tooled and provided by low volume specialists Multimatic, the CC100 utilises the latest generation AM11 naturally aspirated V12 gasoline engine mated to a six-speed hydraulically actuated automated sequential manual transmission. Controlled via steering column-mounted paddle shifts the lightweight ‘box delivers truly sporting changes perfectly suited to the Speedster’s track-focused nature.

The drivetrain will power the CC100 from rest to 60 mph in four seconds, while the top speed is limited to 180 mph.

Dr Bez added: “The future of Aston Martin is, very clearly, more exciting now than perhaps at any time in its history and I’m looking forward to seeing the excitement and anticipation that CC100 creates among Aston Martin owners and enthusiasts worldwide.”

Well, designer Mauro Lecchi felt the same way, and now we’re getting exactly what we wanted. Introducing the Lamborghini power-yacht. This 50 foot, carbon fiber beast sports all the speed and luxury you’d expect from a super-car maker. Did I mention the prototype is under construction?! MmmHmm… check it!

Though it started as just a sketch, the prototype is in production and is rumored to be powered by either two 550hp V12 Motori Marini Lamborghini engines or two twin 950 hp Seatek turbodiesels.

As for the interior, it will be styled by none other than Fenice Milano, famous for working their magic on the Rolls Royce Ghost.

We’ve seen some pretty out-there limited-edition cars from luxury manufacturer Lamborghini, but its newest may have just taken the biscuit and sped off with it.

The Egoista, unveiled at the Grande Giro closing gala, was designed by Volkswagen head of design Walter De Silva, and is designed to be the ultimate in self-indulgence.

“This is a car made for one person only, to allow them to have fun and express their personality to the maximum,” De Silva said. “It is designed purely for hyper-sophisticated people who want only the most extreme and special things in the world. It represents hedonism taken to the extreme, it is a car without compromises, in a word: egoista (selfish).”

The single-person cockpit (we hesitate to call it anything else), angled, crystalline chassis and orange highlights remind us of nothing so much as a space fighter — especially once you check out the launch video below.

Only one Egoista will ever be made: Lamborghini’s anniversary gift to Lamborghini.

From the side, the Egoista is intended to resemble a charging bull (the car manufacturer’s logo) with its horns lowered, to give the car a dynamic, aggressive profile.

Inside the cockpit is a racing seat with a four-point seatbelt, airbags and a minimal instrument panel, with a jet-fighter-like head-up display. In order to get in and out, the driver has to remove the steering wheel and climb over the side. “It’s as if Ferruccio Lamborghini were saying: I’m going to put the engine in the back, I don’t want a passenger. I want it for myself, and I want it as I imagine it to be. It is a fanatical vehicle, Egoista fits it well,” De Silva said.

Flaps integrated into the car’s profile act automatically according to driving conditions. Two rear flaps activate automatically to provide stability at high speeds, while vents on the engine hood provide cooling to the V10 engine.

Powering away under the hood is a 5.2-litre V10 engine that provides the car with a massive 600 horsepower.

The car’s lighting is designed to resemble an aircraft’s, with LED clearance lights, white lights on the front and red lights on the rear, which is left open to show the car’s powerful machinery. The body of the car is made from a special “antiradar material”, and the orange glass is anti-glare.

A future-generation crossover concept providing high efficiency and performance on all road surface conditions and driving environments has been created with a new Subaru design philosophy.

The basic design features simple and clean surfaces and lines. The aim was to create the ideal balance between a solid-looking body and a condensed cabin.

The front-end design boldly emphasizes the motifs common to Subaru products. The larger and outwardly projecting grille provides the keynote of the front-end design, and is the point from which the entire front end connects into a solid, dynamic design.

The simple and powerful motifs of the sides create a new Subaru design element. The grand outward sweep of the integrated fenders and the solid door panel forms create a dynamic side view design.

The upper cabin highlights the window graphics evocative of the shooting-brake body style. It contrasts with a solid body panel design, creating a sporty, lean silhouette.

The “Mistral Silver Metallic” exterior color highlights the dynamic, stylish exterior design of the “SUBARU VIZIV CONCEPT”.

Like the exterior, the interior invokes the promise of dynamic road performance. While great care was taken to design a highly refined environment, interior space was also designed to embody Subaru’s renowned functionality, peace of mind and fun for all occupants.

The cockpit features an instrument panel layout designed primarily for ease of driver operation and vehicle control. The instrument panel displays the operation status of Subaru’s own driving assist “EyeSight” system.
The tachometer and speedometer in the center combine functionality and sportiness, featuring a unique cylindrical design and outstanding visibility.

Custom information displays in front of the front passenger seat and in the rear seating area let passengers share the thrill of being in the driver’s seat.

To implement Subaru’s development concept of human-centered engineering, the two-door, four-seat stylish and sporty body was given a packaging design enabling four adults to ride comfortably even on long road trips.
The 100% motor-driven rear wheels eliminate the need for a propeller shaft, creating a lower floor that offers ample legroom for rear seat occupants despite its compact size.

“Subaru Boxer Diesel Hybrid”, as a proposal to the future of Subaru power units, was mounted in the “SUBARU VIZIV CONCEPT”. The powertrain is a plug-in hybrid system that combines a 2.0-litre Subaru Boxer diesel engine and high-torque-compatible Lineartronic (CVT) with a front motor that provides both vehicle drive and power generation, and two independent rear motors for vehicle drive only. By achieving solid environmental and road performance with this powertrain, Subaru’s “Enjoyment and Peace of Mind” driving experience will be further advanced.

The powertrain selects the best time to use each power unit according to its strengths and the driving application, achieving high fuel economy. The motors start and drive the vehicle during low-speed or city driving, while the diesel engine and high-efficiency Lineartronic take over on the highway.

“Hybrid SI-DRIVE” system has an “Eco-Cruise” mode that provides coordinated control in conjunction with the “EyeSight” driving assistance system in addition to “Intelligent” and “Sports” modes. Engine and motor power are subjected to fine-tuned control according to the travel conditions captured and detected by the EyeSight’s stereo camera, creating an intelligent driving feature designed for safety and environmental friendliness.

“Independent-rear-motor-driven symmetrical AWD” system which is leading the way to a future generation of Subaru AWD technology has been adopted for the SUBARU VIZIV CONCEPT. Subaru is constantly refining its unique AWD systems according to the development philosophy “Four-wheel management”. “Independent-rear-motor-driven symmetrical AWD” system provides fine-tuned control of the four wheels to match the travel environment and road surface conditions.

Two motors exclusively developed for rear wheels’ drive control the rear right and left drive power freely. Coordinated management system of the front and rear motor controls the division of drive power between the front and rear wheels. It increases Subaru’s trademark active safety performance. Turning the steering wheel increases the drive power applied to the rear, creating a handling characteristic that responds nimbly to driver operations. Turning the steering wheel back increases the drive power applied to the front, creating a handling characteristic that emphasizes stability.
In stop-and-go city traffic, all wheels are driven by the motors when starting from rest, providing high starting torque and powerful acceleration, but low fuel consumption with quiet ride.

By independently controlling the drive power applied to the left and right rear wheels, the rear drive system provides more torque to the outside rear wheel and less to the inside rear wheel when cornering to generate inner-directed yaw momentum on the vehicle and achieve extremely quick and smooth “on-the-rail cornering”. Besides helping acceleration and all-terrain performance, this groundbreaking AWD system also uses drive power to help turn the vehicle. Along with its thrilling handling and cornering that responds faithfully to driver operations, it also offers outstanding handling stability that ensures a high level of secure feeling and confident drive.
