This 2009 Ducati Sport1000s is owned by Lucas Worthing, and despite its stunning aesthetics, it’s no trailer queen: Worthing uses it to the max at his local track, the Buttonwillow Raceway in California.

The stock 43mm Marzocchi forks have been swapped out for adjustable Öhlins Road & Track Superbike forks, with a pair of Öhlins shocks replacing the usual Sachs units at the back. To keep the bike tracking straight, an Öhlins steering damper has been installed using a custom mount.

The wheels are now Marchesini forged racing Y-spoke rims, taken from a Ducati 999R and finished in gloss black. Brembo Monobloc brake calipers have been fitted with competition pads, and the rear stoppers have been upgraded to 999R spec to match the wheels. Eagle-eyed Ducatisti will also recognize the 999R front wheel cowl.

Worthing has resisted the temptation to modify the magnificent Desmodue 992cc air-cooled motor. But he’s increased power by fitting a high flow racing air filter from MWR, and an NCR/Zard titanium exhaust system. The ECU has an NCR remap to take full advantage.

There are too many other trick bits on this Sport1000s to mention. But everything is of the highest spec, from the Driven Racing clip-ons and rear sprocket to the Rizoma reservoirs, grips and pegs. And yes, that angular custom fairing really is carbon fiber.

The original Ducati Sport1000s was a marriage of retro and modern. Ducati mostly got it right, but as always, there’s room for improvement. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to see a machine like this rolling off the Bologna production line today?

(And is one reason that the new wave custom scene in Germany has lagged behind other countries.) But there are a handful of German builders who are able to work within the restrictions, and get their bikes road-legal.

One of those builders is Dirk Oehlerking, the founder of Kingston Custom and creator of this surprisingly radical BMW R75/6.

Oehlerking is an accomplished mechanic with a long history of wrenching on and racing bikes. (He was a German national enduro champion in 1985). He’s been operating Kingston Custom since 2010, creating a stream of mild-to-wild customs across several genres.

This R75/6 is a new approach for Oehlerking, though. “I wanted to build an old-school BMW with character,” he says, “using elements of the bobber and Brat styles.” Inspiration started with the tank, which comes from a 50 cc Yamaha ‘Mokick’ and adds an unusually svelte touch for a vintage BMW. The original front fender has been swapped to the rear.

Oehlerking has stripped down and completely rebuilt the motor, finishing it off with glass bead blasting for a factory-fresh finish. It’s now hooked up to a Norton-inspired exhaust system with a reverse cone muffler. The wheels are also bead blasted, and have been fitted with new Metzeler rubber—19” at the front, and 18” at the back.

In keeping with the low, bobber-style stance, the R75’s forks have been shortened by 88mm (3½ inches). The back end is suspended by a pair of authentic Sachs Hydro Cross shocks, a type popular with vintage dirtbike riders. The battery is now hidden next to the transmission in a custom made box, and the foot controls are aluminum.

It’s one of the more unusual customs we’ve seen lately, with an original style and high-quality fabrication.

This is OEM’s first commission-built motorcycle, the EFI. It’s based on a 2009 Royal Enfield Bullet Electra, a machine which can trace its roots back to the days when England had a thriving motorcycle industry. “We were approached by a customer in late 2012 with an idea inspired by a bike from the very talented Rajputana Customs in India,” says Alec. “It was a fine looking motorcycle but there were a few details which we thought we could improve on.”

The stance and look had to be out-and-out bobber, and the customer wanted a ‘chunky’ looking bike. The stock Bullet Electra has rather large 19” wheels, so OEM fitted British-made chrome 16” rims with stainless spokes, shod with Avon Safety Mileage Mk II rubber in a classic block pattern.

“We decided on a USD front end to keep the squat chunky look,” says Alec, “and lowered the rear end with a new set of Hagon shocks. A new double-tubed swing arm was fabricated, wider than stock but the same length. It was important to keep things compact and not ‘stretch’ the bike out.”

The motor has been boosted with a carb conversion kit from Hitchcocks Motorcycles: it includes a 32mm Amal MK1 Concentric carburettor and filter, ignition box, magneto flywheel and extractor. OEM has also fitted a custom-made chromed ‘shorty’ pipe with internal baffles.

New tinware was then fabricated; a Harley Sportster tank was modified to fit and scalloped for looks, with twin pop-up fillers added. The fenders are Wassel-ribbed with hand made struts. The rear portion of the frame was modified to fit the custom seat pan and mountings, and up front, the new clip-ons units were fitted with custom microswitch housings and controls wrapped in Brooks’ finest leather.

The customer wanted a foot-forward riding position, so OEM designed a detachable unit that enables the Royal Enfield frame to accommodate foot controls with custom stainless linkages. The electrics have been revised too, with the mass of wires from the essentials (as well as a clever box of tricks that works the microswitches) now housed in the dummy oil tank.

“We’re very pleased with the build,” says Alec. “It showcases the adaptability of the Royal Enfield EFI motorcycle. In the early 00s, BAR cars carried distinctive Lucky Strike branding, but this had to be modified in countries that banned tobacco advertising. In 2004, ‘Lucky Strike’ was replaced with ‘Look Right’, hence the name of this bike.

Mechanically, we’re looking at a modified frame wrapped around a 1982 Harley ironhead 1000 motor. According to DP’s Justin Del Prado, ‘The project began with a complete tear-down of the bike and then we chemically stripped the frame. We ditched the swingarm and welded on the hardtail.’

This modification lowers and lengthens the bike by four inches. DP also fabricated a battery box, oil tank and seat mounts. ‘We made sure the electrical system was as discreet as possible for a clean, uncluttered look. All the wires and switches are new, even the keys.’

Most other parts are either new or reconditioned; a Keihin CV carb now sits on the intake side, and the exhaust system is custom-built. Everything that has degraded over time, including the fuel and brake lines, has been replaced. The wheels are 19” and 16” and powdercoated, and the seat is from Biltwell—but for me the pièce de résistance is that painstakingly crafted rear fender.

‘For an old classic Harley, this bike is fast and actually handles pretty good, especially with the Pirellis on there,’ says Del Prado. ‘It sounds really mean and the riding position is aggressive with our clip-ons and the seat location.’

Another top-notch job from a company that not only nails the look of its bikes, but also prices them right.

According to DP’s Justin Del Prado, “We started with the idea of building a low slung, stripped down bobber and wanted to incorporate some ideas from the classic Steve McQueen movie Le Mans.

We really love that race era, and try to let it show through some of our bikes.” DP tore the stock ’79 apart, chopped the frame and hard-tailed the rear.

(“This keeps the factory numbers vs. going with an off-the-shelf aftermarket frame.”) The bike sits 4″ lower and longer than stock. DP laced the wheels (21″ and 16″), built the exhaust, and created the paint and graphics with simplicity in mind. “We’re not into cluttered bikes with too much going on.”

The motor is basically stock with electronic ignition and a performance coil. It ran well to begin with, so DP just cleaned it up and replaced all the seals. The rims and handlebars are powdercoated, while the rest of the bike is painted. Anything that started out polished was worked over with abrasives to tone it down and give the bobber a raw, vintage feel.

“Because of its ride height and rigid frame, it’s obviously not made for road racing or cross country tours,” says Del Prado. “It was built for shorter rides around town in nice weather. However, the Biltwell solo seat is so comfortable, you could ride this bike longer than you would think.”

“Raw & Rough. I´ve always wanted a little Cafe Racer for the urban and offroad section. It’s a kind of an cafe-tracker. Big knobby tires, clean lines, flat, raw and rough. I did this conversion in around 3 weeks because I wanted to ride this bastard as soon as possible!”

The Hookie #4 started out as a mechanically sound ’77 Yamaha XS360. Nico retained the bikes original tank which he stripped bare to suit his “rough and raw” theme for this build. He designed and built a custom Cafe style seat cowl to match the clean lines of the tank and the saddle was covered in 16oz Japanese denim by the crew at Rutt Loff.

The handlebars have been swapped for clip ons, set low on the lowered forks with a 4.5 inch headlight nestled between them. The engine and carbs remain stock but the exhaust was been swapped with a set of megaphone mufflers. The Hookie #4 rolls on a pair of 18 x 4.00 Heidenau K67 tires giving it plenty of grip for both sealed and unsealed roads.

The Cafe Racer/Off-roader recipe seems to be taking off in the custom scene, especially in towns where a bit of dirt track can be easily accessed. While I’m not convinced these bikes would deliver the most comfortable ride on unsealed surfaces, I’m sure they’re a hoot to ride. The Hookie also sell a range of tshirts and some lovely custom painted tanks in their store that are worth checking out.

This time DP have gone for a really old school look with a springer front end, vintage Firestone rear tire, and white headers. “My brother Jarrod and I are huge racing fans, and we’ve owned and love old Fords,” says shop boss Justin Del Prado. “The paint scheme was inspired by the 1965 Ford Galaxie that won the NASCAR Championship.

The sharp blue really pops against the cool white, and it looks like magic in the bright sun. Tons of hours were put into restoring this beauty, and now she’s back on the road getting attention—instead of heading to a junkyard.”

After dismantling the 1981-vintage engine, DP found that the internals were in surprisingly good shape, so they simply detailed everything to like-new condition and installed all new gaskets. “We had everything apart to inspect, repair and restore as needed,” says Del Prado. “We spent a couple hours just getting the coil to sit perfectly between the motor, frame and tank. Every nut, bolt, wire and switch is new.”

Ironhead motors make great torque throughout the rev range—over 50lb ft at the wheel—and this makes for a very fun bike to ride around town. So the 5×16 Firestone (rear) and 3.5×19 Avon (front) are for cruising to the local pub rather than MotoGP-style cornering. It’s got the style of a straight line gasser, with a comfortable Biltwell seat and an easy reach to the powder coated bars.

The combination of the 4” under springer with a stretched hardtail gives the bike a great stance. And it’s good to see colors that you don’t normally get on Harleys—like the white wheels and blue frame. If Top Fuel II rings your bell, she’s yours for $11,500.

Maybe Einsteinium. Now I would like to say they have wings, but I think that multiple tentacles is the more likely of the appendages. Tentacles that are able to handle many tools at once – metric, imperial and British Standard Whitworth. And they would be aligned in rows – but not just any old rows.

They’d be in a kind of shark’s teeth formation so that if one should become inoperable another unit would rise up to take it’s place almost immediately and would be individually assisted by a cloned army of that old lady called “Shirl” who lives down the bottom your street, but with a cyclops eye due to an error in the genetic code. And the moths would operate with a pneumatic scream not dissimilar to the sound of a thousand formula one wheel nut removers, which would of course be very loud.

But not as loud as the music playing over the PA system. It’s Yello with that “Oh Yeah” song from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Probably at about 145-150 dB, slowed down to half normal speed, and played backwards.

And that, my friends, is exactly how DP customs turn out so many cool bikes in such a short amount of time. Trust me, I’ve got it all figured out.

Here’s non-metallic non-octapus non-moth, Jarrod “DP” Del Prado. “This build actually started a few years ago and it was my first Harley. I had an 09′ ZX6-R at the time and was riding it on the street and using it for tracks days. I ended up losing the front end at Firebird Raceway and had a decent crash. I decided to keep the Kawasaki and it’s scabbed up skin for track use only after that. I figured I’d go with a Harley for easier going street rides, and my brother Justin found a sweet 82′ Ironhead with a solid running 1000cc engine as a donor. Even though I wouldn’t be attacking corners on this hog, we love racing at DPC so we still had to give it the race look.”

“We started at the rear of the bike by eliminating all of the clutter and hardtailing it. I wanted to go with something extreme on the rear fender, like those old barge board type wings on the D-Type Jags. My Bro is the one with the fabrication hands, so he got to work crafting the wing out of sheet metal. He turned out a perfectly symmetrical and sleek wing. And it was huge – aka perfect.”

“We stuck with a classic Peanut tank, and finished the bike off in red with white accents, and black powder coated wheels. It turned out great and I’ve been riding the hell out of it ever since. Until recently that is, when I got the itch to repaint it. One of the benefits of having a motorcycle shop with a fully decked out paint booth is that you can change up your own machine for fun on the weekends. The new paint job was, of course, inspired by racing. I have been a huge Ayrton Senna fan since his breakthrough races with Lotus. He is, however, mostly known for driving the Marlboro sponsored McLarens, and I always thought that paint scheme would look killer on a motorcycle. I went with his number 8 from the 1993 MP4/8 Ford. Senna scored 5 wins in that car – including perhaps his best ever drive in the wet at Donington Park. His motor was an underpowered B-squad Ford and the car was twitchy to drive, and he still put it at the front with his daring skill.

“I wanted to be reminded of Senna’s greatness every time I rode, and this bright white and neon red livery with DP Customs in a Marlboro font does the trick. While we were at it, we also thought it would be cool to add decals of the folks that help us survive, like we had sponsors. So in addition to the McLaren graphics, we added Strahmphoto, Duffee Motorsports, Onset Networks, Ramjet Racing, and Biltwell. We buried it all in a matte clear.”

“Lastly, since we first built the bike, we’ve been fortunate enough to acquire a proper lathe and used it to smooth the garbage off of the forks. We threw a nice polish on them, and now my machine feels new once again. It is polarizing in the sun, looks like no other Harley in the world, and pays tribute to my F1 hero. Paydirt.”

And there we have it – yet another genius bike from DP. In all seriousness, these guys must work like dogs to be able to grace us with so many sweet rides so frequently. We genuinely hope that Jarrod and the boys continue to send their bikes our way and that we may in turn sizzle your eyeballs with them. Thanks guys – thanks from all of us, including Shirl.
